KARS KAGIZMAN DEVELOPMENT of BEEKEEPING PROJECT
World famous for its delicious honey and fascinating conventional "karakovan" beehives, Kars has been the chief producer of karakovan honeycomb dating back to ancient times.
Unfortunately, due to biospheric pollution, hybrid bee colonies entering the region, and a decrease in the native population of Caucasian Bees (Apis mellifera caucasica), beekeeping in Kars is an endangered agricultural activity.
For the purposes of this project, farmers from five different villages have been contacted in Kars, Kagızman. This is to provide 200 karakovan beehives and necessary equipment for maintenance. Routine controls by the experts have been done in order to prevent farmers’ potential losses, as well as to ensure the project’s success. While providing purchasing guarantees, our mid-term target is to increase both the amount of karakovan hives and the number of future farmers.
